How to Keep a Basketball Box Score

A basketball box score is the running record of everything that happened in the game, broken down by player and by team. On paper, that means a row per player with columns for points (usually tracked by tally marks or running totals as each basket goes in), fouls, and minutes if you're tracking them. The scorer's job is to log every made basket the moment it happens — 2 points, 3 points, or 1 for a free throw — so the running score never falls behind the game. At the end, the box score totals give you each player's points and each team's field goals made/attempted (FGM/FGA) and free throws made/attempted (FTM/FTA), which is what most youth and rec leagues actually want to see afterward.

Fouls and the Bonus (1-and-1)

Team fouls reset every quarter and matter more than most scorers expect, because they trigger bonus free throws. Once a team reaches the foul limit for the quarter (commonly 5 in high school/NCAA, though rules vary by league), the next foul sends the fouled player to the line for a '1-and-1' — they shoot one free throw, and only if they make it do they get a second attempt. Some leagues switch straight to two free throws (the 'double bonus') after a higher foul count. The score sheet tracks team fouls per quarter in a separate box from individual player fouls, so the table can tell at a glance when a team has entered the bonus and needs to start sending shooters to the line on every foul.

Quarters and Timing by Level

Game length varies more than people expect. The NBA plays four 12-minute quarters. NCAA men's basketball plays two 20-minute halves; NCAA women's plays four 10-minute quarters. High school (NFHS rules) plays four 8-minute quarters in most states, though some use four 6-minute quarters for younger levels. Youth and rec leagues often shorten further — running clocks and 6-minute quarters are common to keep games moving. Whatever the length, the score sheet's quarter-by-quarter columns work the same way: record each team's points for that quarter as it ends, and the running total carries forward automatically.
