A game of bowling has 10 frames. In frames 1-9 you get up to 2 balls to knock down all 10 pins. Write each ball's pin count in the small boxes, then the frame's running total below.
A strike (X) is all 10 pins on the first ball — mark it in the first box and leave the second blank. A spare (/) is all 10 pins across both balls. An open frame is any frame where pins remain after both balls.
A strike scores 10 plus the pins knocked down on your next two balls. You can't finalize a strike frame's total until those next two balls are thrown.
A spare scores 10 plus the pins knocked down on your very next ball. Add that bonus ball to the frame total once it's thrown.
The 10th frame is special: if you strike or spare, you get a 3rd ball to finish out the bonus pins. That's why the 10th frame box has 3 slots instead of 2.
A perfect game is 12 strikes in a row (all 10 frames plus the 2 bonus balls in the 10th) for a maximum score of 300.
