Double elimination is a tournament format where a team has to lose twice before they're out. Every team starts in the winners bracket. Lose once, and you drop into the losers bracket for a second chance. Lose twice, and the tournament is over for you. The winners bracket champion and the losers bracket champion then meet in a grand final to decide the tournament.
The winners bracket plays out like a normal single elimination bracket — win and advance, lose and drop down. The losers bracket collects everyone who's lost once, and mixes newly-dropped teams with survivors from earlier losers-bracket rounds. Whoever wins the losers bracket faces the winners bracket champion in the grand final. Because the losers finalist already has one loss and the winners finalist has zero, the winners finalist only needs to win once to take the title — but if the losers finalist wins that first grand final game, both teams are tied at one loss each, forcing a decisive bracket reset game.
A single bad call, one off game, or an early-round upset shouldn't be the entire story of a team's tournament. Double elimination gives every team a real second chance, which means the final results reflect a team's overall performance rather than a single unlucky match. It's the standard for competitive formats like Magic: The Gathering, fighting game tournaments, and many regional sports championships, where organizers want the bracket to reward consistency, not just survive-one-bad-round luck.
An 8-team double elimination bracket runs 14 matches if the winners bracket champion takes the grand final in one game, or 15 matches if a bracket reset is needed. A 16-team double elimination bracket runs 30 matches without a reset, or 31 with one. Double elimination takes roughly twice as many matches as single elimination for the same team count, so budget extra time or extra concurrent playing areas when you schedule the event.
