A 16 team double elimination bracket is a tournament format for 16 competitors where each team must lose twice to be eliminated, combining a 4-round winners bracket and a 6-round losers bracket that converge in a grand final across 30 or 31 total matches.
The same double elimination principle from smaller brackets applies here: every team gets a second chance. A single loss in the winners bracket doesn't end your tournament — it drops you into the losers bracket, where you keep playing until either your second loss or a run all the way to the grand final.
The winners bracket for 16 teams looks like a standard single elimination bracket: Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the Winners Final, for 15 matches total among teams that haven't lost yet. The team that runs this side undefeated becomes the winners bracket champion and waits in the grand final.
The losers bracket is where things get more complex. It has 6 rounds because new teams keep dropping in from the winners bracket at multiple points, not just at the start. Every team that loses in the winners bracket gets funneled here, and the bracket alternates between rounds of newly-dropped teams and rounds of survivors, until one team emerges as the losers bracket champion.
The winners bracket champion and losers bracket champion meet in the grand final. Since the losers bracket champion already has one loss and the winners bracket champion has none, the winners bracket side gets a slight edge: if they win the grand final outright, the tournament ends at 30 matches. If the losers bracket champion wins that first grand final game, both sides now have one loss, triggering a bracket reset — a 31st and final match to decide the champion.
