An 8 team double elimination bracket is a tournament format where each of 8 teams must lose twice to be eliminated, running through a winners bracket, a losers bracket, and a grand final across 14 or 15 total matches.
Double elimination means you have to lose twice, not once, to be knocked out of the tournament. Every team starts in the winners bracket. Lose there, and instead of going home you drop into the losers bracket for a second chance — only a second loss actually eliminates you.
An 8 team double elimination bracket has three parts. The winners bracket plays out like a normal single-elimination bracket — 3 rounds, 7 matches — until one undefeated team remains. Every team that loses along the way drops into the losers bracket, which runs 4 rounds as those teams fight to survive. The losers bracket champion then meets the winners bracket champion in the grand final.
An 8 team double elimination bracket plays 14 matches if the team from the winners bracket wins the grand final in one game. If the team coming up from the losers bracket wins that first grand final game instead, both finalists now have one loss each, so a 15th and deciding match — the bracket reset — determines the champion.
If your actual roster is smaller than 8 — 5, 6, or 7 teams — byes apply on the winners bracket exactly as they would in a single elimination bracket. With 6 teams, for instance, seeds 1 and 2 get byes into the winners bracket's second round while seeds 3 through 6 play it out in round one. The losers bracket then builds itself naturally from whoever actually loses a match.
