An 8 team single elimination bracket has 7 total matches across 3 rounds: 4 quarterfinals, 2 semifinals, and 1 final. Every team plays at least one game, and the champion plays three.

With 6 teams filling an 8-slot bracket, the top 2 seeds get a bye straight into the quarterfinals while seeds 3-6 play two first-round matches to fill the remaining quarterfinal spots. That gives you 5 total matches instead of 7.

Standard seeding pairs strong teams against weak ones so the best teams can't meet early: 1 vs 8, 4 vs 5, 2 vs 7, and 3 vs 6 in the quarterfinals. This keeps seeds 1 and 2 on opposite sides of the bracket until a possible final.

With 7 matches across 3 rounds, an 8 team bracket usually fits in a single day if you run quarterfinals in parallel on multiple courts or fields. A single-court event with back-to-back matches can still finish in one long session for most sports.
