How the Circle Method Works

The circle method is the standard way to build a round robin schedule. Picture one team fixed in place while every other team sits around a circle. Each round, the circle rotates one position, pairing up new opponents until everyone has faced everyone else. With an odd number of teams, a placeholder "bye" seat joins the circle — whichever team lands on it sits out that round. This is exactly what the generator above does automatically, and it also alternates who's listed as home and away so no team gets stuck on one side all season.

Single vs. Double Round Robin

A single round robin has every team play every other team exactly once. A double round robin plays that same schedule twice, with home and away reversed the second time — like a normal sports league's home-and-away split. Double round robin doubles your total games and gives a more reliable ranking of teams, but it also doubles the time and court space you'll need.

Round Robin vs. Single Elimination

Round robin guarantees every team plays the same number of games and produces the fairest overall ranking, but it takes far more games than single elimination — a 10-team round robin needs 45 games versus just 9 for a single-elimination bracket of the same size. Use round robin for small fields (3-8 teams), league play, or pool play stages. Use single elimination when you have more teams and less time. Many tournaments combine both: round robin pool play to seed teams, followed by a single elimination bracket.

Scheduling Tips: Courts, Time Slots, and Rest

Add more courts or fields to shrink your event's total time — with 2 courts, each round's games run in parallel instead of back-to-back. Build in a short buffer between rounds so teams and refs have time to reset, and if you're running a double round robin, consider spacing the two legs across different days or sessions rather than back-to-back so the rematches feel fresh.
